Why I’d Love A Cristina Yang Return to Grey’s Anatomy

We all knew Cristina Yang as Meredith Grey’s best friend and better half. Despite the conflict between the two, Grey and Yang were close and maintained their friendship throughout Yang’s ten-season run on Grey’s Anatomy. The two coined the term “my person”, which greatly symbolized what they meant to each other. Yang and Grey’s friendship was one of the series’ central plot points.

Evolution Of Cristina Yang As A Character

Upon watching the show for the first time, a lot of folks were drawn to Cristina’s character, largely due to the character’s depth. She might have come off as cold in some instances, but she had a lot of experiences that made her more human, and thus relatable. She also made a lot of sarcastic remarks, like when she said “Sleeping with our bosses was a great idea” to Meredith on one of their jogging sessions in the third episode of season 2.

Besides her on-and-off relationship with Meredith, another one of Cristina Yang’s first storylines in Grey’s Anatomy involved her bond with Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). Not only did this give the show a new branch, but we also saw their relationship hand in her development.

Not long after that, the pair took things to the next level by getting engaged halfway through the show’s third season. In an unfortunate turn of events, Burke left Cristina at the Chapel on their wedding day, making the end of their engagement in the season three finale. Now heartbroken, Cristina was at odds with herself throughout the fourth season of the show. Realizing how much she changed for her ex-fiancé, Cristina begins working through her denial. She pushed herself to rebuild her foundation and reignite her passion for surgery. During this season, we had the delightful opportunity to witness her tackling challenges and undergoing personal growth. We get a glimpse of this development through monologues provided near the end of the season.

Character With Goals

Right from the get-go, Yang burst onto the scene with a rocket-powered ambition. Her character oozed an inspiring drive and determination. Most importantly, her storyline revolved around a passion for her craft.

Yang’s character was like a beacon of light that illuminated the path for Asian women around the globe. Thanks to her empowering presence in every scene, Cristina Yang shattered the chains of traditional gender roles. This invited women fans to embrace their ambitions. That’s why her departure from the show left a collective heartache in its wake.

Yang leaves The Show In Season 10

When Cristina Yang finally left Grey’s Anatomy in season 10, fans were the most upset about how we would neither see her prominent scenes nor the iconic duo moments between her and Meredith. As we remember, Cristina’s departure from Seattle and the series arrived in the form of a tempting offer from Burke. This was an opportunity to be the cardiothoracic surgeon of the hospital he established in Switzerland. With her relentless ambition and razor-sharp focus, Yang couldn’t resist seizing this golden chance. Now, she remains a memory in the show.

Cristina Yang Is An Icon

Rather than being nothing but a memory on the show, we love the idea of having Cristina Yang back to continue her plotlines. We think it would be interesting to catch up on her life. How is the Switzerland job going for her? We know cardiothoracic surgery was her passion. What has she achieved since we last saw her? Is she still working there? And, is she still in Switzerland? If so, what’s her love life like? Is she still in touch with her “person”, Meredith? Everyone is itching to know.
